A child has been born to you in Japan
You are a couple already in Japan and a child has just been born. There is a deadline on this one, and it is short.
A child born in Japan who will stay beyond 60 days needs a status of residence, and the application must be made within 30 days of birth. There is no fee. Couples routinely miss this because nothing prompts them and the newborn period is busy.
Note this is the child limb of the same status, which has its own forms, its own checklists and its own one-page questionnaire — not the spouse forms.
The order things happen in
-
Register the birth at the municipal office
Within 14 days. The child is entered on the Japanese parent's family register. -
File the acquisition-of-status application within 30 days of birth
At the bureau covering your address. No fee.
Watch out:
If the child acquires Japanese nationality, no status of residence is needed at all — check the nationality position before assuming an application is required.
Starts on the acquisition route, so you are only asked the questions that apply to this situation.
